My theoretical approachI am an integrative therapist which means I will not limit myself to one single approach when working with you. Instead we will explore together the most effective ways to work, drawing from the diverse range of psychotherapeutic models and interventions. I have as my core model Transactional Analysis which is a modern psychodynamic theory (developed from the work of Eric Berne) which is very intuitive and down to earth. We will talk about your ‘contract’ or goal, how your thoughts feelings and behaviour help us make sense of what is going on for you now, and how to facilitate change. Transactional Analysis offers us a basic road map or plan of work together. My work with you is based on our therapeutic relationship of equals. Research shows the huge positive effect of talking therapy, and shows that the quality of the relationship is the main reason for success.

Interventions we may use are very varied and guided by your wishes and needs. I have had very positive outcomes using such interventions as imagery, metaphor, sand tray, stones, clay, music, gestalt techniques and those from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Where it is beneficial, we will adapt these methods for use in online/telephone work. Many clients like to work visually or with music. Sometimes there may be ‘homework’ to do between sessions such as journal keeping, or keep a record of your thoughts. |
Our relationshipOur therapeutic relationship in counselling is key!
Successful outcomes in counselling do not just depend on the professional skills and knowledge of the counsellor, but also on their life experience and capacity for reflection. In achieving my qualification, I also undertook therapy, to support myself through a challenging course, and to learn more about what makes a successful therapeutic relationship. A successful therapist reflects on their own life experiences in order to better support their clients. I see you, as myself, as an individual, on your life path, not to be defined by your age or the type of challenge facing you presently. We all evolve and our coping with what life throws up is affected by our past experiences, our connections with others, and our personal resilience.
